AGENCY PARTNERS

MAGI is hosted by the Johannesburg office of Hivos, providing oversight, day-to-day management and programme implementation. BLA from their office in Cape Town provides implementation and administrative support in the Eastern and Western Cape. The financial management of MAGI is provided by Hivos, and the participating donors contribute their funds to the Hivos account and payments to projects are made via this central fund.

A set of complimentary values underlie the participation of the four agencies in MAGI.

Hivos:
Established last year as a Section 21 Company, Hivos-South Africa is part Hivos the Dutch development aid organization, which operates on the basis of humanist values and aims to contribute towards a free, just and sustainable world. Hivos is committed to the poor and marginalized, particularly women – and to the organisations that promote their interests.

Breadline Africa:
Breadline Africa (BLA) funds programmes, projects and activities that alleviate poverty and empower the marginalised, are developmental in approach and address injustices which deny those on the periphery access to facilities, resources and participation. Based in Cape Town, BLA has a wide reach to communities in both urban and rural areas of the Western and Eastern Cape.

Atlantic Philanthropies:
Atlantic Philanthropies is dedicated to bringing about change to the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged people. In South Africa, Atlantic Philanthropies provides support to projects and programmes that ensure people have access to quality health care irrespective of their economic situation. The other core aspect of support promotes reconciliation and peace building, improves access to the justice system and ensures the human rights of vulnerable groups.

WHEAT Trust:
WHEAT Trust promotes a culture of giving through supporting South African grassroots women’s leadership initiatives to build local communities. It has established a women’s fund to support women’s education and training needs and promotes the culture of giving among individuals, organisations and communities. Based in Cape Town, the Trust works nationally and collaborates with MAGI on a specific fund for community initiatives addressing gender based and sexual violence.

MAGI also collaborates with a wide range of other grant makers and receives support from the Ford Foundation and Uthando Social Development Projects.

All the agencies are strategic and developmental grant-makers, and see women’s participation and empowerment as central to programming. The collective knowledge and experience spans decades providing a richness and depth to the work of MAGI.
